Most registrars have a 30-40 day renewal grace period window when a domain expires. After that it goes into what's called the redemption period for 30 days. You may be charged more than the renewal fee to have your domain reinstated at this point.
After the 30 day redemption period, the domain is not retrievable, and goes back into the public pool where it's available for new registration.
